Hire an Apprentice

There are two ways to get an Apprentice:

  1. Engage a Group Training Organisation to provide you with an Apprentice on a short-term placement.
  2. Hire the Apprentice yourself under a Contract of Training (COT)

Steps to take:

Firstly work out if you need the extra capacity and decide to hire an Apprentice either:

a.  through a Group Scheme OR

b.  look at hiring your own Apprentice

1.  Engage a Group Training Organisation to provide you with an Apprentice on a short-term placement

Group Training Organisations employ large numbers of Apprentices. You can hire one from the Group Scheme on an hourly rate basis as a ‘Host Employer’ as and when you need the extra capacity. You can retain the Apprentice for as long as you need the extra pair of hands. If you are taking a break or if the Apprentice doesn’t work out, the Group Training Organisation will place the Apprentice elsewhere.

You won’t qualify for CITB’s direct funding incentives but you will get the benefit of a reduced rate for construction Apprentices because the Group Training Organisation is paid the employer subsidies.

There is minimal paperwork with excellent productivity.

Click on the Employer Information link then ring one of the listed GTOs depending on the trade and your location.

 2.  Hire the Apprentice yourself under a Contract of Training (COT)

You will need to be able to commit to the entire term of the contract – up to four years and you will be responsible for all of the administration associated with the Apprentices employment and training.

To find yourself an Apprentice:

Ring 08 8226 0480 to find a DECS Apprenticeship Broker near you. Ask them about employing a Doorways2Construction program student, and ask about School-Based Apprenticeships

You may qualify for a range of Government and CITB financial incentives as detailed in the CITB radio ad campaigns.   Contact your local Australian Apprenticeship Centre for details.
