CITB has the role of Industry Advisory Body (IAB) for the construction industry in South Australia. In this role, CITB provides advice to the Government on matters relating to Training Package development, training more generally and workforce development.
What is Workforce Development?
Workforce development aims to improve entire industry workforces by focusing on areas like population policy, migration initiatives, health and retirement policies, industrial and human resource policies and training policies. Within the construction industry, workforce development includes
- Plan - workforce planning
- Attract - attracting people to the industry
- Recruit - source, screen, select, induct
- Manage - personnel management
- Develop - training and experience
- Retain - work retention strategies
- Return - keeping older workers
Construction Industry Workforce Action Plan
In 2009, CITB participated with the SA Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST) and industry in the production of an action plan for the construction industry in South Australia. The resulting Construction Industry Workforce Action Plan was released in September 2009, and can be viewed here, or downloaded as a PDF here (right click and choose Save Target As...).
Recent Construction IAB projects
- Wise Guys - a pilot program to capture the skills of highly experienced tradespeople by providing them with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and links to Registered Training Organisations
- Heritage Artisan Training - a program aimed at preserving rare, heritage and artisan trades. To date courses have been run in heritage timber framing and stonemasonry. Further courses are planned for fibrous plastering and heritage painting.
- Migrant Support - a program aimed at attracting newly arrived skilled permanent migrants into the industry by providing the training required to obtain the necessary licences to work in the SA construction industry.
- Aboriginal Workforce Development - CITB employs a Field Officer to make links with the SA Aboriginal community with a view to developing a range of workforce development programs within the construction industry.
